What we love
The epitome of tropical island holidays but just that bit more special thanks to its incredible, unadulterated location.
Setting the scene
As the first luxury resort to open in the Thaa Atoll in the Maldives, Maalifushi by COMO has every right to be smug as it basks - much like the often-sighted whale sharks and manta rays - in the sparkling clear waters and white powdered sand of this unadulterated haven. With its 66 villas and suites, both on land and over water, you are truly absorbed into the nature and beauty that surrounds you.
Whether you prefer to have your feet firmly on land, or floating just above the crystal clear water with the only obstruction to your view being a diving sea bird or a whale surfacing for air, there is plenty of choice. On land, the garden rooms inter-connect which makes them ideal for families, whilst the garden suites are very roomy and have direct access to the beach, and the garden villas get their own pool. Over water the suites and villas offer unsurpassed views of the ocean and sunsets, but the villas have an additional private pool, sundeck and full length windows.
The food at Maalifushi by COMO is as exquisite as the views: Madi (meaning manta ray in the local Dhivehi language) derives its inspiration from the local fresh seafood and produce, with flavours taken from Mediterranean, Indonesian and Thai influences. Thila is an informal restaurant and pool bar that takes inspiration from rock formations found in the Maldives that are covered with abundant marine life. Here they serve lighter, locally-inspired dishes whilst playing laid-back music in an open air pool bar with ocean views. Tai, or red snapper, an important fish in Japan's culture, serves melt-in-the-mouth sushi and cocktails, as well as 'yakiniku' grills used to prepare marinated and infused cuts of fine meat in Japanese flavours, such as sake, mirin and sesame.
If just staring disbelievingly at the sheer beauty of the place isn't enough there is the COMO Shambhala Retreat Spa which has 8 treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and yoga pavilion. There is also a well-equipped dive and watersports centre for non-motorised water sports and a range of activities including sunset and dolphin cruise, snorkelling and sailing. Maalifushi can also arrange beach picnics on neighbouring deserted islands for a real taste of the Robinson Crusoe.
Children are welcome.
